The Emalahleni crime mapping project is aimed at reducing crime in the area by using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and conducting research into crime incidence in the area. The overall objective of the project was to contribute to safety and security in Emalahleni by painting a quantitative picture of crime in the area using research by questionnaires and GIS mapping. The main towns in the area are Lady Frere, Dordrecht and Indwe and they are situated within the Chris Hani District Municipality. The project identifed crime hot spots, assessed the accessibility of police stations in the communities; examined the mobilisation of stakeholders to work together in improving criminal justice and also took into account the realignment of police station jurisdictions and expanding the Community Police Fora.
