Emalahleni Crime Mapping Project

The Emalahleni crime mapping project is aimed at reducing crime in the area by using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and conducting research into crime incidence in the area. The overall objective of the project was to contribute to safety and security in Emalahleni by painting a quantitative picture of crime in the area using research by questionnaires and GIS mapping. The main towns in the area are Lady Frere, Dordrecht and Indwe and they are situated within the Chris Hani District Municipality. The project identifed crime hot spots, assessed the accessibility of police stations in the communities; examined the mobilisation of stakeholders to work together in improving criminal justice and also took into account the realignment of police station jurisdictions and expanding the Community Police Fora.

EU-funded Sustainable Rural Development in the Eastern Cape

RULIV is the implementing agent of this joint programme of the European Union and South Africa. SURUDEC aims to reduce poverty in the Eastern Cape through the development and implementation of community development plans. The programme uses two funding mechanisms to achieve this and following grant calls, 19 projects have been granted funding in partnerships with NGOs as legal entity partners (LEPs). Premised on the asset-based development approach, SURUDEC aims to document lessons learnt, thus piloting innovative approaches for possible application elsewhere in appropriate settings. The projects are spread across the province and range in scope from strengthening land reform beneficiaries on restitution farms to rural communities developing eco-tourism products such as forest bird walking trails. The programme runs until the end of 2011.
