In an effort to try and thrash out issues facing effective rural development, the SURUDEC Programme Coordinating Unit based in RuLiv is planning a two-day conference entitled Rural Development at a Cross-Roads Conference in East London in August 2012.
Conference presentations will include international, national and regional perspectives together with lessons emanating from the provincial SURUDEC pilot programme within the final months of its operational phase. Many SURUDEC projects have completed their activities while others finish up towards the end of the year.
Rural development had to be seen as more than a sprinkling of agricultural projects.
In addition, a compete re-orientation of the way extension and other support services were delivered to stimulate rural economies was urgently needed.
Such was the message delivered by rural development practitioners to the Ambassador of the European Union Delegation to South Africa, Mr Roeland van de Geer and staff who visited SURUDEC and Thina Sinako projects in the Eastern Cape in early November, 2011.
Accompanied by the Head of Development Co-operation, Mr Richard Young and project officers for the two provincial EUfunded programmes SURUDEC and Thina Sinako, Catherine Mgangira and Milly Chesire respectively, the Ambassador was on a two-day mission to familiarise himself with projects in the Eastern Cape.

A WARM welcome to the third issue of SURUDEC News aimed at keeping stakeholders abreast of programme activities and progress.
In this issue we bring project activities to the fore with news from as many projects as possible. We also feature reports from two important SURUDEC seminars.
We welcome feedback and news so don’t hesitate to contact us at the details on the bottom of page 5.
TEN members of the SURUDEC team embarked on a study tour visit to KwaZulu-Natal and Swaziland late in 2010 aimed at sharing learning lessons from EU and other donors as well as rural and community development initiatives in the region. Another smaller team consisting of procurement and monitoring and evaluation staff also visited micro-projects in Zambia, specifically around the town of Mongu in the western district of Zambia.
What follows are edited reports but should anyone need more detailed information on the lessons learnt, reports are available.
ARE YOU participating in a project that is working well? SURUDEC invites you to tell us about it so that we can add it to our database and share it with others.
We are interested in projects that contribute to sustainable rural development in the Eastern Cape. SURUDEC is aiming to compile and share information regarding provincial rural development initiatives that reflect on sound development experiences, lessons learnt and best practices that have been achieved.
We’re also looking for short-term experts to register with us particularly in the fields of organisational development, rural development, land issues, small-scale agriculture, permaculture and alternative or appropriate technologies.
